How to do lecture note-taking in class during university life
Introduction
Note-taking is an important
representation of the knowledge writing that takes place in formal educational
environments. The present study is about note-taking methods and different
ideas to take notes in class. There are different methods to take notes in class but only two note-taking methods have been discussed.
- Paper-pencil method of note-taking
The paper-pencil note-taking method
involves writing and jotting down the ideas in which the main ideas or most important
points are written down. Another method is a mobile note-taking strategy. The mobile-note-taking method is defined as recording the lecture on a mobile phone and taking pictures
from the whiteboard. Note-taking tasks motivate the learners in the process of
thinking, memorizing, recalling process, and performing. It was research about
the two methods of note-taking like mobile phone and paper-pencil. The result showed
that in all, 48.6 percent of students agreed that mobile phone note-taking
limits students ‘ability to compose and organize their work in good order, 27.3 percent were not sure, while 24 percent disagreed with the statement.
- Cornell's method of note-taking
The Cornell note-taking method is
a system for taking, organizing, and reviewing notes. This method was devised by
Walter Pauk. This method is defined in
the following picture.
Definition
Note-taking is a concept that suggests the idea of writing down ideas. Note-taking is important for remembering,
and listening carefully to the lecture. Note-taking is an old method of
remembering concepts for example when one has to buy something from the market,
one has to write down the things to remember. Secondly, note-taking is important
because it improves listening skills. Listening skills can be improved in a
way that while making notes one listens carefully to the lecture and then write
down only important points but listen to all of the lectures. Therefore, note-taking
is an important technique and strategy in class. How one can take notes in class? Following
are some of the important concepts that can help to take lecture notes.
Must have a notepad, ballpoint, and a highlighter
While you sit in the class lecture
you have to take notes. For note-taking, the student must have a notepad, a ballpoint, and a highlighter. Also, the reading material should be there like
books and notes provided by the teacher. The student should listen carefully to
the whole lecture and write down the new ideas or main points of the lecture. Also,
he should pay special attention to the books and should highlight the discussed
ideas by the lecturer.
Listening carefully
Listening is an important technique
and a very beneficial point here. Pay special attention to the lecture. Because
once you miss one idea you would not be able to reach the understanding level
that the teacher is being teaching. So, the listening technique here is that you
should develop an interest in the lecture.
Formulating interest in the
lecture
Developing interest is a
difficult task but you can. There are many ways to develop interest. The interest
can be developed if you consider that this topic will be a part of the paper or
quiz. So, understanding this you will listen carefully and pay attention to it.
Paying attention to the class
lecture
Paying attention means listening
to the lecture carefully in a way that should be understandable by you as a
student. You can pay attention to the lecture if you are serious about your
studies. If you think that class lectures are part of the paper you will make
up your mind in this way. So, pay special attention to the lecture by considering
the teacher and the points written on the whiteboard.
Having focus on the teacher and
the whiteboard
Some teachers use the whiteboard and
some teachers use projectors. But your duty and task here are to listen
carefully to the lecture and make notes for you that may help you in remembering what you have read. You can write down the points discussed by your
teacher and take an image of the concepts written on the whiteboard and
projector. So, focusing on the teacher can help you in a way that you will listen
to it carefully. By focusing on the teacher and whiteboard you will be able to
make important points in the notes.
Jotting down the important points
Important points are those points
that are an outline of the lecture. Also, important points are those which
should be remembered while discussing a particular topic. Writing the important
points is important. Because, if you write important points, you will be
able to search for the points after the lecture. That will help you to make
notes of your own.
Compose the important points
but listen to the whole lecture carefully
Remember, the important points should be written while note-taking but pay special attention to the
whole lecture. By listening to the whole lecture, you can compose
something. The teacher prepares the lecture in a way that he/she first introduces the topic and then tells major points like advantages, disadvantages,
types, and properties of a particular idea. After that, there is a proper
conclusion for a particular idea. So, you should focus on the whole lecture that
will help you in understanding.
Revising the lecture
Once you have taken the lecture
and noted it down, the best part here is to revise your lecture. Read it 2-3
times. Then note down the difficult points and search for them on the internet. You will
be able to understand it.
Conclusion
These points are really important
in a note-taking lecture. If you have joined a college or university for the first
time and your exposure to the lecture is at the first time, these methods will be
very helpful. On the other hand, if you are well aware of taking notes of the
lecture by focusing on these points you can be able to write down an effective
note of the lecture. Surely, these points will be very helpful.
